Significance Level

Definition

Let $\varphi$ be a test. It is said to be of significance level ${\alpha }^{\prime }\in [0,1]$, if its size $\alpha$ satisfy the inequality

$\alpha \le {\alpha }^{\prime }.$

If $\alpha <{\alpha }^{\prime }$, then the test is referred to as conservative test.

Interpretation

Boundary for specifying a statistically significant finding when interpreting the P-value.
